Daniel Del Shafer, 60, of Novinger, Missouri died unexpectedly on Sunday evening January 6, 2019 at Research Medical Center in Kansas City. He was surrounded by love and family as he passed.

Daniel was born June 9, 1958, in Kirksville, MO to Donald and Maxine (Snyder) Shafer. His father was a Navy veteran who served in both WWII and Korea while stationed aboard the USS Antietam. His parents resided most of their marriage on the family homestead where he and four brothers were raised.
Daniel spent his youth growing up on the family farm that was part of the Shafer-Vanlaningham Homestead on highway K outside Novinger. He enjoyed horseback riding, hunting, fishing, and was an avid outdoorsman. Daniel was proud of his family’s long history in the community and often shared stories of his parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles. He attended school in Novinger, MO and graduated from High School at Novinger R-1 in 1976. Upon graduation, Daniel immediately joined the military and served in the Army from 1976 to 1981. After attending basic training in Ft. Leonard Wood, he served as a construction machine operator, spent 3 years overseas in Germany, and received commendations as a Sharpshooter with a rifle and hand grenade. He also received a Good Conduct Medal during that time. Daniel was honorably discharged in 1981 where he ended his military career at Fort Hood in Texas. He then spent most of the next 30 plus years as a truck driver and had the opportunity to visit all of the continental U.S. in his travels.

In recent years, Daniel enjoyed doing online college courses and earned an associate degree in Business. He spent much of that time with his beloved dog Scooter who accompanied him almost everywhere.
Daniel Shafer’s name can be found on the Veteran’s Memorial Wall located at Rotary Park in Kirksville and serves as a tribute to his service to his country. He was also a proud member of the Masons Lodge #273 in St. Clair county and a lifetime member of the NRA. He was an avid gun enthusiast and collector. He enjoyed building guns, reloading his own ammo, and collecting gun books and manuals. He was also very proud of owning his own semi-truck and drove it as a feed hauler up until the time of his death.

When not working, he spent most of his time with his children and grandchildren. He strived to teach them the values of hard work and independence and frequently shared words of love and encouragement. Daniel was loved for his thoughtfulness, generous nature, and enduring sense of humor.

Daniel Shafer is survived by four brothers-Daryl Shafer of Kirksville, Daran Shafer and wife Marsha of Ft. Madison, DeVan Shafer and wife Brenda of Smithton, and Donovan Shafer and wife Teressa of Green Castle; one son, Brandon Shafer who resides in California and two daughters, Kristin Borders and husband Doug, Lura Scott and significant other Jack Thompson, all of Kirksville.
He was also survived by his grandchildren-Brandon Borders; Jenna Thompson and Bella Green; Jackson, Jacob, Dorian, Thomas, and Adam Shafer; and Henry and Kevin Alvarez.
Many nieces and nephews survive him as well.

Daniel was proceeded in death by his parents and one nephew, Jacob Shafer.

Daniel Shafer chose to be cremated and asked to have his ashes spread on the family farm.

A service to celebrate Daniels life with military rights will be held at 1:00 pm on Sunday March, 10, 2019 at the Novinger Community Center in Novinger, Missouri. Fellowship and a dinner will follow the service.

What a shock, my prayers are with all that knew Dan and his family and love ones .You knew me better than myself or anyone else . You was a caring and loving man , even though things didn't work out for us , you was always in my Heart, you was one of few men I knew that treated me kind and was honest and always had a lending ear and the best advice you could give . I know you had many dreams of your home on the farm and retirement .oh and how do proud of your kids and grandkids, you were and they brought such a big smile to your face. I never forgot you Dan and still wont . May you fly high and pain free now , my love is with you ....I'll always remember you . ❤💔😎

We are so sorry to hear of Daniels passing. Daniel drove a truck for us for many years and continued to stay in touch or stop in for a visit after leaving us. You could always count on a joke or story and a good laugh with Daniel around. He was a great guy and great truck driver. He will truly be missed by all who knew him. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.

i am so sorry for your loss. I haven't seen any of you since we were teenagers but I was Aunt Gladys and Uncle Curtis niece. I always loved spending time with your family at the farm. I have such fond memories of that time. Daniel was too young to leave this world. I will be praying for you all.
